Halloween Dinner for Two to DIE for!

October 2, 2020 by Alyson Filed Under: Halloween, Holiday Decor Leave a Comment

This Halloween dinner for two is just to DIE for!

Creating a Halloween table scape is one of our favorite things to do during the spooky season! This takes “to death do us part” to a whole new level. These two skeletons clearly are inseparable and come to life at night for a spooky Halloween dinner.

With this years theme being spell casting WITCHES the floating witch hats have quickly become a favorite in our haunted home.

Creating a Halloween Dinner for two is spooky easy and fun for the whole family. The floating witch hats, colorful pumpkins, and bleeding candles bring this dinner to life.

Creepy black muslin fabric hanging from the celing is a simple way to transform any space. Add a mixture of fake and real pumpkins, a few strands of lights and you have an incredibly witching display.

We brought the witchy Halloween kitchen to life with a few easy décor items, some spider webs, and of course the bats and pumpkins! Who said Halloween décor couldn’t be easy?!

A little dry ice and warm water is one of the spookiest ways to create your witchy halloween kitchen and really make things come to life! Dry ice can be purchased at most grocery stores and can be added to cocktails, drinks or cauldrons to create fun and frightful night!

September 25, 2020 by Alyson Filed Under: Halloween, Holiday Decor Leave a Comment

Halloween has taken over our home and were beyond ready for the spooky season! We spent the last week turning the interior of our home into our very own haunted house.

Each year we spend weeks thinking about what our theme will be and were excited to announce that this year we are bringing our witchy dreams to fruition. Our home will look like the Sanderson sisters have been reincarnated come October 31st if we have anything to say about it!

Look at this years spell brewing witchy Halloween mantel! I have to say were pretty excited with how this turned out. We’ve linked some of our favorite items we used to create this spellbinding display below.

As the Sanderson Sisters would say.. “I SMELL CHILDREN!” & this little guy is clearly SPOOKED!

After this little guy is in bed hubby and I turn off the lights and watch our favorite Halloween movies. whether its Hocus Pocus for the 15th time or our annual re-watch of all the Harry Potter movies being snuggled up on the couch with this witchy Halloween display definitely sets the mood. Spice up the night with some Halloween snacks & your favorite bubbling beverage.

**Children were in fact bribed with candy in the making of these photos **

Who doesn’t love an excuse for a Halloween photoshoot. Creating a spell brewing witchy halloween mantel is our favorite way to get into the Halloween spirit. Not only is it fun for the kids but great for those adult Halloween parties as a picture backdrop.

Our Witchy Halloween Entry

August 17, 2020 by Alyson Filed Under: Halloween, Holiday Decor Leave a Comment

Looking for a frightful way to scare your guests and fill your home with a haunting Halloween vibe?! Our Witchy Halloween entry is sure to spook and make you feel like you’re living in a haunted house!!

Our Halloween Entry is one of our favorite projects come Halloween time. Every year we try to come up with something new and creepy. This time we chose a witchy theme filled with potion bottles, glowing cauldrons, and spell books for our Halloween entry.

When the sunlight goes down the haunting begins!

SPIDER WEBS:

One of our favorite tricks is with the spider webs. We used tiny brad nails where the ceiling meets the wall about every 5ft. They are so small and so discrete that we leave them up all year round (Don’t Tell!). From that point we start at one end of our Halloween entry with a bag of our favorite webs and wrap parts of the web around the nails. It usually takes us 2-3 bags to go about 20 feet.

Spider Web Tip: Stretch them tight from one side to the other as you work your way down the hall. After they are secured you can pull pieces from the center to make them hang like real spider webs.

What We Use:

The best part about this project is its completely customizable to YOUR space as well as an inexpensive and easy way to get an awesome effect.

How to get your spider webs to glow:

If you want your spider webs to glow like ours do at night you can use a projector. This creates such a hunted & spooky feeling at night, we do this for both of our indoor and outdoor decorations. Our favorite projector is listed above.

We have tried SO MANY different projectors and this is by far our favorite because there are 15 different light colors to choose from. As the light rotates it makes the spider webs look like they’re alive! Throw some spiders into your webs and you have a super creepy Halloween entry display.

Witchy Halloween Decor

Since we went with the witchy theme for our Halloween entry we had to go all out! We have our Hocus Pocus inspired black flame candle, spell books, glitter filled potion bottles, witches cauldron with Mr. Bones cooking up a spell & our personal favorite the bleed skeleton candles.

Most of these things were purchased from Michaels & TjMaxx over the years but I’ve found some really great substitutes on Amazon to help you complete your Spooky Halloween entry.

Another great way to increase the spook factor of your Halloween entry is to add some ghostly fabric & haunting Halloween lights. We use an automatic light timer so our display turns on automatically every night. We use these for all of our holiday décor and absolutely love them.

There is something about the ghostly fabric and glowing orange lights that really make things feel extra haunted! A little tip: tear extra holes in your fabric to make it look old and ratted.

Halloween Party Supplies

Here are a few of our favorite items we use to host the most chilling Halloween party. This of course can be made into a kid friendly party as well with a few less jello shots!

Glowing Cocktails

One of the best ways to set the mood for your Halloween party is by making things glow when the lights are off. Did you know you can make any liquid glow by adding tonic water or my favorite B2. B2 is a supplement that is used to help with migraines. So were treating hangovers while also enjoying super fun drinks .

These capsules are the best, simply dissolve them in water or your drink of choice (There’s no weird taste don’t worry) turn on those black lights and ENJOY!

Glowing Jello-Shot Syringes

Directions:
– Boil Water
– Empty jello powder into a large mixing bowl and add the boiling water
– stir for two minutes or until the jello is completely dissolved
– OPTIONAL: Add Vitamin B2 (IF you want them to glow in black light)
– Add Cold Water
– Add Vodka
– Use Syringes to suck up mixture
– Refrigerate

Slime Cake

A neon slime cake is not only super easy but I also had a really fun time with this one. Here are a few of the items I used.
– 3-4 inch cake pans
– 1 tub of white frosting
– 1 tub of chocolate frosting
– Chocolate cake mix
– neon green & black food coloring
– Halloween sprinkles.

White Chocolate Vampire Fountain

Spooky Halloween Mantel Décor

August 8, 2020 by Alyson Filed Under: Halloween, Holiday Decor Leave a Comment

Its the BEST time of the year and we couldn’t be more excited to be sharing all of our spooky Halloween decorations! Halloween is a huge tradition in our house & this year is no exception even with a global pandemic upon us. Weve had lots of time to scheme & plan this year and we cant wait to share.

What are your family’s Halloween traditions? Is there something unique that spark the Halloween spirit in your kiddos?

In our house we are all about going to our local pumpkin patch and partaking in all of the activities. Haunted hay rides, corn mazes, apple cider, apple pie, pumpkin lattes for mom & dad, and of course pumpkin donuts for the kiddos. I’m also a huge fan of baking all things pumpkin. Halloween cant come soon enough so we will just start a little early this year.

We always start with our indoor décor so our neighbors don’t think were crazy for decorating as soon as September 1st hits.

Every year I try to switch up the Halloween decorations and find new ways to keep things creepy! This is our super awesome Halloween mantel with a cute little candy stealer that decided he would figure out what the candy is all about. I dont blame him Halloween is in his blood.

After this little guy is in bed hubby and I turn off the lights and watch our favorite Halloween movies. Hes a good sport, he must watch Hocus Pocus 15+ times by the time the 31st comes. October is also our dedicated month to re-watch all of the Harry Potter movies. The lighting at nigh really gets us in the spirit! So SPOOKY!

The 1st Trimester With Baby #2

The 1st Trimester with Baby #2

Note: Affiliate links may be used in this post. I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you if you make a purchase through my affiliate link.

HOW WE FOUND OUT

For those who don’t know with baby #1 we found out we were pregnant with our first in Thailand on a two week vacation with some friends. Talk about timing. Baby #2 was a product of quarantine! Making married people work from home together… that’s a recipe for baby’s!

This time around I knew I was pregnant around the 4 week mark, once you’ve been through it once its like you know the minute it happens round 2- at least for me. Once I saw that faint + sign I decided I needed to wait a few days just to be sure. I love telling hubby were pregnant in fun ways so this secret was a hard one to keep!!

Fast-forward to Saturday morning in May.. I decided to make homemade cinnamon rolls. COME ON – he should have known right then and there. I yelled from across the house ” Honey I think the oven is broken ( Its brand new)” AGAIN totally should have caught on. He rushed into the kitchen opened the oven and saw a cinnamon “Bun” in the oven with note that said “Baby #2 due 2021” He was shocked! We are those incredibly lucky people who get pregnant the moment we even think about another babe. Its a dangerous situation!!

THE EARLY DAY’S

Right around the 5 week mark the nausea decided to come in full force! They say “morning sickness” whoever coined that term really needs a revision for all day & all night sickness. Just so you know exactly how bad it was here is a fun story… Hubby was pumping gas, I was in the car. He opened the door to throw his wallet in the cup holder & BAM. As soon as I caught a whiff of that gasoline, I had to jump out of the car. I proceeded to dry heave IN PUBLIC for the next 5 minutes. I can laugh about it now but in the moment I thought for sure I was going to die of sickness & embarrassment!

There are plenty of stories I can share, I wont even touch on the crazy hormones! With my first pregnancy the smell, look, taste of any form of meat was a huge trigger for me. There was no form of meat that was allowed to be cooked inside the house or I was sent running for the bathroom to toss my cookies! Needless to say the nausea has always been a huge hurdle for me in the early days of the glamorous 1st trimester.

CRAVINGS

This is a fun one, you have to promise not too laugh-too hard! Ill start with the weirdest one.

Balsamic vinegar… I could put it on ANYTHING and I mean absolutely anything but only when pregnant. I hardly eat it when I’m not pregnant so I think this one takes the cake for weird cravings. My favorite is drowning sliced bell pepper, onion & cucumber, in balsamic. Dont ask me why, even the doctor laughed at that one. Here are a few others

  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Bean and Cheese burritos
  • Orange Juice
  • Oranges
  • Bagels

THINGS THAT HELPED IN THE 1ST TRIMESTER

  • Naps- This is a given but truly the best way to feel better… sleep through it LOL
  • Snacking frequently- One of my friends said you tend to experience increased nausea when your blood sugar is low so snacking frequently or drinking a bit of juice helps. This is MAGIC!
  • Eating crackers first thing in the morning
  • Staying hydrated- In the first few weeks my thirst was insatiable.. yet drinking straight water made me super sick! I tried Liquid IV after a friend recommended it & It was so incredibly helpful.
  • Baths with Epsom salt & a who lot of bubbles

If you’re in the first trimester and are living the pregnancy dream with no nausea, no weird cravings I totally envy you! If you’re like me and sick as can be, I get it & I’m right there with you. Hang in there growing a beautiful little human is hard work, you take those naps & make hubby chase that toddler for an hour.

Our Farmhouse Entertainment Center Makeover

July 26, 2020 by Alyson Filed Under: Home Creations Leave a Comment

This whole quarantine-stay at home order has driven us to remodel what feels like the entire house! How else do you keep yourself busy?!

Also taking new tv show recommendations….

We loved our original entertainment center/TV hutch but over the years its taken a few beatings. This thing even traveled across the country with us to Memphis, Tennessee after college when we were chasing a new adventure. Now its regularly covered in baby goo.. although that will probably never change we thought it would only be right to give our trusty entertainment center a little refresh!

Farmhouse Entertainment Center Makeover:

  • Our Cost: $180
  • Purchasing a New Furniture Piece: $1,600
  • Savings: $1,420
Note: Affiliate links may be used in this post. I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you if you make a purchase through my affiliate link.

WHAT WE USED FOR OUR FARMHOUSE ENTERTAINMENT CENTER MAKEOVER:

  • Miter Saw
  • Table Saw
  • 2×4 for interior framing
  • Drill
  • Plywood
  • Paint
  • Wooster Paint Brush
  • 1X6 for the new top
  • 1.5 Inch Screws
  • Wood Filler
  • Clamps
  • Speed Square
  • Level

We’re here to show you that with a little wood, some fresh paint and a few power tools you can turn that old piece of furniture into something brand new. From the beginning we knew we wanted a larger statement piece in our secondary living room/kids play room. A farmhouse style entertainment center that we could hide those kids toys in so our house didn’t constantly look like a disaster! Below is our solution, we figured we had nothing to lose if it didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to. After all it is 10 years old..

STEP ONE: FRAMING

Okay Okay excuse the mess!

The first thing we did was remove the shelves, doors and the old scuffed top. We were able to reuse about 90% of the original wood, that $$ saved!

We repurposed the top of the original hutch into the brown base you see on either side. With a little paint you couldnt even tell. After that we began the framing.

We started with the base which was structurally built out of 2×4 with cross beams for support. The purpose of this was to increase the height of the entertainment hutch. The bigger, better and wider statement piece aspect we were going for. We then covered the framed 2×4 with a higher quality 1×6 that would later be painted.

The Sides, shelves and backer board of the hutch were made from plywood. We highly recommend using a step up from the normal plywood as it makes a huge difference when painting. We used 3/4 inch pressed redwood plywood which is more expensive BUT totally worth it.

For the top of the entertainment hutch we used 3-1×6 boards stacked side by side. Again we were going for that farmhouse shiplap look so decided this would be the best bet.

After the framing was done we made sure to use a wood filler to fill in the nooks and crannies to make sure our piece looked as professional as possible. DONT SKIP THIS STEP!!! After a light sanding we were ready for paint!

STEP TWO: PAINTING

Now for the fun part & the home stretch! PAINT!!

choosing the proper paint is so so important and I’m not just talking about the color. We chose Behr Premium Semi Gloss mainly because this is a thick yet durable paint that is completely cleanable- remember we have lots of baby goo!!

We also used a higher quality paint brush. We love to wooster brand of brushes we find that they leave very few brush marks and never ever shed. Using a good paint and a good paint brush is worth the few extra bucks. That’s how you transform a home DIY project into something that looks professionally done.

Instead of looking for a brand new piece of furniture, with a little love & paint you can transform that old entertainment center piece into a brand new farmhouse entertainment center!! If this pandemic has given us one thing.. its time.. to reimagine and recreate!

STEP THREE: DECORATING

This to me is the best part of any project! I am constantly rearranging our decor to freshen things up. Below are some of my favorite must have decor items that translate to every season.

Our Roatan Honduras Vacation Adventure- A Must see location

July 26, 2020 by Alyson Filed Under: Life & Family Leave a Comment

Roatan is a must see island within the Caribbean. Our family vacation to Roatan has become a regular for us and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Home to the second biggest barrier reef, some of the most beautiful underwater sights you’ll ever lay your eyes on, crystal clear 80 degree water, white sand beaches and a deliciously strong drink called the Monkey LaLa.. I promise to provide a cheater recipe later.

Scuba Diving:

Our family loves to scuba dive its truly become a family affair. All the kids in our family including the spouses have been required to get our PADI (scuba diving certification) Were pretty sure its a form of hazing or initiation to be able to marry into the family.  If you love to dive or are looking to complete your certification we know the absolute BEST guy on the island! Tom- A Canadian turned Honduran owns the Blue Lagoon Dive Shop on West End.

Note: Affiliate links may be used in this post. I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you if you make a purchase through my affiliate link.

If you’re not a diver don’t worry, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the islands beauty. One of our favorite things to do is relax on the beautiful beaches and swim in the crystal clear water. If you enjoy snorkeling and swimming there isn’t a better place to do it. The reef is full of the most vibrant fish. After a good swim we always refresh ourselves with one of those Monkey LaLas I was telling you about. Holy YUM! There are so many beach bars on west end you truly cant go wrong.

Monkey LaLa Drink Recipe:        1oz Baileys
1oz Kahlua
1/2oz Vodka
1/2oz Rum
2oz Cream of Coconut splash of cream or milk or coconut milk
Optional Items: Chocolate Syrup swirled on the inside of glass & 1 banana blended with ingredients
**Pour all ingredients in a blender with about 15 ice cubes & Enjoy!**
West End snorkeling was absolutely beautiful!!

Where to stay:

This is our favorite place on West End which overlooks the ocean, I’m pretty sure this is a little slice of heaven. We stay here every time and wont be changing anytime soon!

This location is 5 minutes from the west end beaches and close to all of the beach bars. Plus look at that pool, this house is a dream.

BOOK THIS HOUSE HERE!!

Where to eat:

There are so many wonderful places to eat in Roatan Honduras you truly cant go wrong. Here are some recommendations for West End
