The 1st Trimester with Baby #2

HOW WE FOUND OUT
For those who don’t know with baby #1 we found out we were pregnant with our first in Thailand on a two week vacation with some friends. Talk about timing. Baby #2 was a product of quarantine! Making married people work from home together… that’s a recipe for baby’s!
This time around I knew I was pregnant around the 4 week mark, once you’ve been through it once its like you know the minute it happens round 2- at least for me. Once I saw that faint + sign I decided I needed to wait a few days just to be sure. I love telling hubby were pregnant in fun ways so this secret was a hard one to keep!!
Fast-forward to Saturday morning in May.. I decided to make homemade cinnamon rolls. COME ON – he should have known right then and there. I yelled from across the house ” Honey I think the oven is broken ( Its brand new)” AGAIN totally should have caught on. He rushed into the kitchen opened the oven and saw a cinnamon “Bun” in the oven with note that said “Baby #2 due 2021” He was shocked! We are those incredibly lucky people who get pregnant the moment we even think about another babe. Its a dangerous situation!!
THE EARLY DAY’S
Right around the 5 week mark the nausea decided to come in full force! They say “morning sickness” whoever coined that term really needs a revision for all day & all night sickness. Just so you know exactly how bad it was here is a fun story… Hubby was pumping gas, I was in the car. He opened the door to throw his wallet in the cup holder & BAM. As soon as I caught a whiff of that gasoline, I had to jump out of the car. I proceeded to dry heave IN PUBLIC for the next 5 minutes. I can laugh about it now but in the moment I thought for sure I was going to die of sickness & embarrassment!
There are plenty of stories I can share, I wont even touch on the crazy hormones! With my first pregnancy the smell, look, taste of any form of meat was a huge trigger for me. There was no form of meat that was allowed to be cooked inside the house or I was sent running for the bathroom to toss my cookies! Needless to say the nausea has always been a huge hurdle for me in the early days of the glamorous 1st trimester.
CRAVINGS
This is a fun one, you have to promise not too laugh-too hard! Ill start with the weirdest one.
Balsamic vinegar… I could put it on ANYTHING and I mean absolutely anything but only when pregnant. I hardly eat it when I’m not pregnant so I think this one takes the cake for weird cravings. My favorite is drowning sliced bell pepper, onion & cucumber, in balsamic. Dont ask me why, even the doctor laughed at that one. Here are a few others
- Balsamic Vinegar
- Bean and Cheese burritos
- Orange Juice
- Oranges
- Bagels
THINGS THAT HELPED IN THE 1ST TRIMESTER
- Naps- This is a given but truly the best way to feel better… sleep through it LOL
- Snacking frequently- One of my friends said you tend to experience increased nausea when your blood sugar is low so snacking frequently or drinking a bit of juice helps. This is MAGIC!
- Eating crackers first thing in the morning
- Staying hydrated- In the first few weeks my thirst was insatiable.. yet drinking straight water made me super sick! I tried Liquid IV after a friend recommended it & It was so incredibly helpful.
- Baths with Epsom salt & a who lot of bubbles
If you’re in the first trimester and are living the pregnancy dream with no nausea, no weird cravings I totally envy you! If you’re like me and sick as can be, I get it & I’m right there with you. Hang in there growing a beautiful little human is hard work, you take those naps & make hubby chase that toddler for an hour.
